Kuttalam Palace, also known as Courtallam Palace, is a historic Travancore-era
royal residence located in Courtallam village, Tenkasi District, Tamil Nadu, at the
foothills of the Western Ghats, near the famous Courtallam Falls — a major
tourist attraction in the region.
Built in 1882 by Maharaja Vishakam Thirunal, the palace and its associated rest
house together span an area of 56.57 acres. The palace campus is divided into two
distinct sections by the Kuttalam–Shenkottai Road:
The Main Palace campus includes
- The Main Palace - The Main Palace building features a grand Darbar Hall, with two air conditioned rooms on each side. The hall opens into an extended corridor that provides access to the kitchen area and the adjoining storeroom.
- The Ammavaka Nalukettu - The Ammavaka Nalukettu, a traditional Kerala Nalukettu structure, highlights the cultural heritage of the Travancore royal family. It features two bed areas with attached bathrooms, and one common bathroom. The building is situated 400 meters to the right of the Main Palace.
- The Palace Annexe - An independent building located approximately 500 meters to the right of the Main Palace. The palace annex includes four spacious rooms.
- The Twin Cottage - This building features two attached cottages located directly facing the Main Palace. Each cottage is a twin-type, air-conditioned unit with two beds and an attached bathroom.
The Diwan Cottage Campus includes
- The Scorpion Building - The Scorpion Building, also known as Diwan Cottage, is uniquely designed in a scorpion shape. It includes a spacious hall, three rooms, and a kitchen area connected through a verandah. The building features a large kitchen with an outdoor extension suitable for bulk cooking.
- Cottage I,II and III - The property includes three individual cottages, each thoughtfully designed with two well-appointed rooms and an attached bathroom, offering guests a comfortable, private, and convenient accommodation experience surrounded by a peaceful and scenic environment.
- Secretary Quarters - The Secretary Quarters is an exclusive, fully air-conditioned accommodation facility available only for VIP and PWD staff. It comprises a common hall, a specially designed PWD room with separate sleeping and common areas and an attached bathroom, and a VIP room featuring two bed areas and two attached bathrooms.
